Two Kenyans were crowned the winners of the 50th annual New York City Marathon on Sunday — including a woman who took gold at the Tokyo Olympics marathon just months ago.
Albert Korir, 27, crossed the finish line with a time of 2:08:22, while the women’s title went to Peres Jepchirchir, 28, also of Kenya, who clocked 2:22:39.
“I didn’t imagine I would win today,” said Korir, who hasn’t been atop any podium since winning the Ottawa Race Weekend Marathon in 2019.
Each will take home a $100,000 first-place prize.
